How I Used "Places in Town" Flashcards & My Students' Reactions

In my class, I used the "Places in Town" flashcards during a speaking activity to help my students practice vocabulary in a fun and interactive way.

I started by placing the flashcards on the board—park, library, supermarket, cinema, and hospital. I then told the students, “I’m thinking of a place where you can read books. Can you guess where I am?” Immediately, little hands shot up, and one student excitedly shouted, “Library!”

We continued the game with more clues like, “This is where you go if you feel sick,” and they all responded with “Hospital!” The energy in the room was great—everyone wanted a turn to guess.

To make it even more engaging, I let the students take over and give clues to their classmates. This simple twist made them feel more involved, and even my shy students wanted a turn.

Their Response

The kids loved it! They were laughing, raising their hands, and even using full sentences like, “I think it’s the supermarket!” It was so rewarding to see them using the new words confidently. By the end of the lesson, they remembered the names of the places without needing the flashcards.
It was a simple yet effective way to boost their vocabulary and get them excited about learning.
