Sight Words - Part 2: Fun & Easy Learning Cards for Grade 1

Sight Words Part 2" is a colorful and interesting learning tool made to help Grade 1 pupils recognize and read common English sight words. Each page focuses on one sight word like he, can, is, go, for, in, make, one, see, you.

Each card has a colorful sight word, a simple sentence using the word, and a picture to show what it means.

(e.g., "He is playing basketball", "I see a bird").

What Are Sight Words?

Sight words are common words that young readers must recognize instantly without sounding them out. These words are often irregular and don’t follow standard phonetic rules, making them crucial for early literacy. Examples include "he," "can," "is," and "you."

If you are new to sight words, you may want to start with Part 1 before exploring these fun cards.

Mastering sight words allows children to read faster and focus on understanding the text.
I designed these sight word cards to help my little pupils read and understand common English words. Many of them were just starting to read, so I wanted to make learning fun and easy.

In class, I used the cards in different ways:
I showed them one by one and read the sentence aloud.Pupils repeated the word and the sentence after me .We played games like “find the word” or “make a sentence.”
I also put the cards on the board so pupils could read them during the day.
These cards helped my pupils build confidence and enjoy reading!

After this activity, my students were ready to try even more advanced practice. You can continue with Part 3.

Tips for Using Sight Word Cards with Grade 1 Pupils

Introduce One Word at a Time:

Show the card, say the word, and use the sentence. Let pupils repeat after you.

Use Daily Review:

Spend a few minutes each day going over old and new cards to help children remember.

Play Matching Games:

Mix the cards and ask pupils to match the word with the correct picture or sentence.

Use in Small Groups:

Let pupils take turns reading the cards in pairs or small groups for more practice.

Stick Cards Around the Class:

Place them on walls or the board so pupils can see and read them every day.

Create a Word Wall:

Build a colorful display of all sight words you’ve learned together.

Let Pupils Act Out the Sentences:

For example, when reading “He is playing basketball,” they can pretend to play basketball!

Ask Simple Questions:

After reading the card, ask questions like: “Who is he?”, “What is he doing?”

Make Your Own Cards Together:

Let pupils draw a picture and write their own sentence using the sight word.

Use Them in Writing Time:

Encourage pupils to use the sight words when writing their own short sentences or stories.

How to Print and Prepare the Sight Word Cards

  • Use Good Quality Paper: Print the cards on A4 or letter-size cardstock so they are strong and last longer. Regular paper is okay too, but cardstock is better.
  • Choose Color Printing (if possible): The cards are colorful and more fun for kids when printed in color. But they still work in black and white.
  • Print 1 or 2 Pages Per Sheet: If you want big cards, print one page per sheet. For smaller cards, choose “2 pages per sheet” in your printer settings.
  • Laminate the Cards: To protect them from tearing and make them reusable, laminate the printed pages. You can use a home laminator or take them to a print shop.
  • Cut the Cards: Use scissors or a paper cutter to neatly cut out each card along the edges.
  • Organize in Sets: Keep them in labeled envelopes, folders, or a small box so they’re easy to find and use.
  • Use a Ring Binder (Optional): Punch a hole in one corner of each card and put them on a metal ring for flipping practice.
