Build a Sentence – A Set of Fun Grammar Worksheets for Kids

Fun Grammar Worksheets

I created this collection of worksheets to help young learners practice making simple, correct sentences in English.
each line gives a group of  words. The student’s task is to rearrange them into the correct order to form a complete  sentence.Students  will find many short, playful sentences made from common words they know, such as:
"He plays with his car."
"She has a doll".
"The dog runs fast."
"Mom cooks yummy food."

The worksheets include a variety of subjects and verbs (e.g., playing, eating, jumping, riding), so students stay interested while learning. Each sheet includes space for the child’s name and date, making it easy to track progress.
These worksheets are ideal for:

  • Kindergarten to early elementary students.
  • ESL (English as a Second Language) learners.
  • Classroom activities, homework, or literacy centers.

How I Use These Worksheets in My Classroom

I use this set of “Build a Sentence” worksheets regularly in my classroom to help students improve their English sentence structure in a fun and interactive way.
1. Warm-Up Activity
At the start of the lesson, I give students one or two jumbled sentences to solve. This gets them thinking and ready to focus on word order and grammar.
2. Group Work
Sometimes I divide the class into small groups. Each group gets a different sentence. They work together to rearrange the words, then read their sentence aloud. This builds teamwork and speaking confidence.
3. Independent Practice
Students complete the worksheets individually as part of their language practice. I walk around the room to support those who need help and check their answers.
4. Pair Check
After they finish, students swap papers with a partner and check each other’s work. This helps them learn from their mistakes and see different ways to think about sentence structure.
5. Homework
These worksheets are great for homework because they are short, simple, and give clear practice on one skill. Parents can easily understand and help if needed.
6. Extra Support
For students who need extra help with grammar or reading, I use these worksheets in small group interventions. The simple sentences are just right for building confidence.

These worksheets are flexible, easy to use, and enjoyable for students. They turn grammar practice into a fun and meaningful activity.
My students really enjoy using the Build a Sentence worksheets. The sentences are short and use simple, familiar words, so students feel confident and happy when they complete them. They like the challenge of putting the words in the right order. Some students even ask for more because it feels like a fun puzzle.

Tips for Teachers and Parents

  • Do one sentence at a time. Don’t rush. Give the child time to think.
  • Say the words out loud. This helps with reading and understanding.
  • Find the first word. Ask the child, “What word should come first?”
  • Use pictures or actions. If a word is hard, show a picture or act it out.
  • Help and encourage. Sit with the child and guide them if they get stuck. Praise their effort.
  • Let them write the sentence. After they fix the order, they can write it to practice.
  • Practice often. Doing this regularly helps Children learn faster.

Building Sentences, Building Confidence

Helping young learners master sentence structure doesn't have to feel like a grammar lesson. With short, playful activities and meaningful repetition, students begin to recognize word order naturally.

I've seen these kinds of worksheets transform hesitant writers into confident ones — and the best part? They think it's just a fun puzzle.
